Blue-green Algae Blooms
Stagnant water and hot weather can produce algae blooms every year. Exposure to blooms can pose health risks to people and pets, regardless of whether toxin is present. Also, you can't tell if it does contain toxins just by looking at it. So out of caution do not let your pets swim or walk, or drink from water that contains it.
The ASPCA has a brief but informative write up, please take the time to read it. ==> ASPCA Poison Control Alert
The State of NY offers useful information on the location, size and and status of blue-green algae blooms for the current year. It's useful to look at their HABS map before you go recreating in local bodies of water. (HABS = Harmful Algae Bloom Status) ==> NYHABS (New York HAB System)
